Monsoon-Proof Your Home: Why Solid Teak Outlasts Every Season
Every June, we Indians feel the respite from the scorching 40°C heat. Suddenly, one evening, the windows get flung open, and in comes the cooling monsoon. But while you feel the respite, your furniture is staging a rebellion.
We've all experienced it: that engineered wood dresser that swells just enough that the drawer refuses to open. The particleboard shelf bows under the weight of a few books and some trapped moisture. The chair starts to creak ominously by July.
But there’s a wood that doesn’t bow down even in the rainiest of monsoons, and that’s the good old Teak.
The Wood That Was Born for This
Teak didn't earn its reputation by accident. Indigenous to the forests of South and Southeast Asia, the very regions where it rains the heaviest, it evolved in conditions that would destroy most other woods.
And all because teak produces its own natural oils.
These oils work as a built-in moisture barrier, keeping water from penetrating the grain. While engineered wood absorbs humidity and expands like a sponge, solid teak doesn't. The oils also contain silica, which adds an extra layer of protection and gives teak its characteristic lustre.
The result is a wood that remains dimensionally stable.
Why Indian Homes Need This More Than Most
Humidity in India isn't a seasonal visitor; it’s our default setting. Coastal cities like Mumbai and Chennai see relative humidity hover above 80% for months. Even landlocked cities like Hyderabad and Bengaluru feel the swing between dry summers and wet monsoons acutely, and that expansion-contraction cycle is exactly what wears furniture down over time.
Most affordable furniture is built for showrooms, not for Indian climates. It photographs beautifully. It lasts two monsoons, maybe three if you're lucky. Solid teak is the opposite investment. It looks better with age; the grain deepens, the oils settle, and it develops a richer patina.
Low Maintenance of Teak
Unlike many materials, teak asks for very little in return. Keep it away from standing water. Wipe it down if it gets wet. If it's been a particularly brutal season, a light teak oil treatment once a year keeps the wood nourished. That's it.
No special coatings to reapply. No panic if the humidity spikes. No regretting the purchase.
At Plankly, every piece is crafted from solid teak and joined using Japanese joinery techniques. The structure is inherently strong and flex-resistant, which means the monsoon stress that loosens screws and warps panels simply has nothing to grip onto when it comes to Plankly furniture.
The Long-Term Relationship
Good furniture is a decision that rewards you for years. The monsoon will return as it always does, and each year your Plankly pieces will sit there, completely unbothered, while cheaper alternatives get replaced again.
Because we at Plankly believe that seasons change, but good furniture shouldn't.
